Amon Düül II

Amon Düül II came out of the German experimental rock scene in the late 1960s. Their early albums like 'Phallus Dei' from 1969 and 'Yeti' from 1970 featured sprawling jams and unconventional instrumentation that helped define what people would later call cosmic rock or krautrock. Songs like 'Archangels Thunderbird' and 'Ain't Today Tomorrow's Yesterday' show that approach.

Later records like 'Carnival in Babylon' and 'Viva la Trance' moved toward more experimental and dance-oriented directions. The lineup shifted over time, with members including guitarist Chris Karrer, vocalist Renate Knaup, and bassist Peter Leopold. Their music sometimes touched on political or social themes, and they had connections with groups like the radical theater Kommune 1.

You can hear it in tracks like 'Apocalyptic Bore' or 'You're Not Alone', music that feels both of its time and oddly outside it.
