Andreu I Els Rumberus

Andreu i Els Rumberus formed in Barcelona in 1976, coming out of the working-class neighborhood of El Poble Sec. The band included guitarist Andreu Soler and vocalist Juanito Valderrama, with other musicians rotating through. Their 1980 debut album "La Rumbita de la Calle" featured the song "Pena Negra," which became their most recognizable track.

That song carried a particular weight in their catalog, a ballad that stuck with listeners even as the band's sound drew from traditional Catalan rumba alongside flamenco and pop elements. They toured through Europe and Latin America in the years that followed, though the late 1980s brought some public difficulties that briefly affected their standing.

They kept recording into the 1990s with albums that found a renewed audience. The group's lineup shifted over time, but the core connection to that Barcelona rumba scene remained.
