Editor's note

Andy Williams, the smooth voice of American television

His relaxed baritone made him a familiar presence in living rooms for decades.

For the holiday mood, obviously 'The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year.' But 'Happy Heart' captures his everyday charm just as well.

Williams hosted 'The Andy Williams Show' from 1962 to 1971, earning Emmys while his recordings became part of the American soundtrack. 'The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year' is now a holiday standard, and songs like 'Happy Heart' and 'Call Me Irresponsible' still surface in films and commercials. He gave that era a particular kind of easygoing warmth.

He signed with Cadence Records in 1952 after serving in the Navy, where he sang in a choir. The television show defined his public presence through the 1960s, and he kept recording albums like 'Moon River and Other Great Movie Themes' long after it ended.

Archive material and source history

Andy Williams was born in Wall Lake, Iowa in 1927 and grew up in a musical family. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school, singing in a choir during his service. In 1952, he signed with Cadence Records and released his debut single 'Canadian Sunset,' which helped establish his career.

From 1962 to 1971, Williams hosted his own television variety program, 'The Andy Williams Show,' which became popular and earned him several Emmy Awards. His smooth baritone voice and relaxed stage presence made him a familiar presence in American homes during those years.

In 1963, Williams recorded 'It's The Most Wonderful Time Of Year,' written by Edward Pola and George Wyle. The song became one of his most enduring recordings, particularly associated with the holiday season. Other songs like 'Happy Heart,' 'A Summer Place,' and 'Call Me Irresponsible' also became part of his repertoire.

Williams continued performing and recording for decades, releasing numerous albums including 'The Andy Williams Christmas Album' in 1963 and 'Moon River and Other Great Movie Themes' in 1961. He worked with various musicians and occasionally performed with other singers from his era.
