Angel Almanzar King

Angel Almanzar King formed in Santo Domingo in 1993, led by Angel Almanzar with family members on bass, drums, and piano. Their music worked with merengue, bachata, and salsa, but what people remember is the directness of songs like '12 Mandamiento y El Demonio #13' from 1996. That track and others like 'Vivencias' dealt plainly with faith and social questions, which drew both listeners and some criticism.

They put out albums through the late 1990s and 2000s, including 'Alma y Vida' in 1998 and 'Huellas del Tiempo' in 2006. The writing often felt personal, touching on themes that showed up in titles like 'Insomnio, Depresión y Ansiedad' and 'Freestyle desamor'. The sound wasn't overly polished, which gave it a grounded quality that connected in the Dominican Republic and in some circles abroad.

Their catalog has a mix of set pieces and what they called freestyles, with 'Freestyle #1' being another example. The band's approach was straightforward, lyrics that spoke to everyday struggles and beliefs, set against those familiar rhythms.
