Angélica Azevedo

Angélica Azevedo came up in Salvador, Bahia, where she grew up listening to Brazilian artists like Maria Bethânia and Caetano Veloso. Her first album came out in 1998, and it was the song 'Ore Mais' that really caught people's attention. That track became something of an anthem for her, a straightforward piece about faith and resilience that stuck around.

She kept putting out records over the next decade or so, including 'Fé' in 2001 and 'Luz' in 2012. Her music has touched on samba and gospel at times, and she's worked with other Brazilian musicians like Ivete Sangalo. Songs like 'Tempo de Deus' and 'Do Jeito de Deus' show her leaning into that spiritual side without getting preachy about it.

There was a legal dispute with her label back in 2006, but she came through it and kept recording. These days you might hear her on something like 'Quero Ser Prioridade,' a collaboration with Marcos e Matteus that has a more contemporary feel.
