Anjóla formed in 2016 around vocalist and songwriter Anóla, drawing inspiration from Nigerian Afrobeat figures like Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. They played early shows including the Lagos International Jazz Festival.
Their debut album 'Fora do Normal' came out in 2018, with the title track becoming something of an anthem. They followed it with 'Sol' in 2020 and 'Origami' in 2022.
Some of their lyrics address social and political topics, which has occasionally sparked debate in Nigeria. The band includes Anóla on vocals, Etiene Oluwa on bass, Akinsola Akintunde on drums, Tunde Owoeye on keyboard, Timileyin Setonji on saxophone, and Adewale Oladele on trumpet.
