Annie Ross was born Annabelle Ross in London in 1930 to a musical family. Her mother was the singer Ella Logan, and her father was musician John Ross. At 17, she joined the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, known for their scat singing and harmonies. Their 1958 album 'Sing a Song of Basie' was a notable release.
She recorded 'Love For Sale' in 1959, a Cole Porter song from the musical of the same name. Her version drew attention for its phrasing and interpretation, though some found the lyrics suggestive for the time. Ross also recorded songs like 'Twisted' and 'To Hell With Love'.
Ross faced personal difficulties, including struggles with addiction. In 1963, she was convicted of heroin possession and served prison time. Her career continued despite these challenges.
