Editor's note

Anthem's Canadian rock with a 'Be My Lover' hit

A Toronto band from the 1980s that scored a top 10 Canadian single and kept recording for decades.

For the early sound, 'Be My Lover' is the obvious place to start. If you want to hear what they did later, try 'Eternal Warrior' from the '90s.

Anthem's 'Be My Lover' was a genuine Canadian radio hit in 1981, cracking the top 10 and giving the band a real foothold. That song, along with tracks like 'Heat of the Night' and 'Steeler,' represents a specific moment for homegrown rock. They kept at it long after the charts moved on, which says something about the band's persistence.

They formed in Toronto in 1980 and released their debut the next year. The original lineup with Lenny Wolf lasted until the late '80s, then the band continued recording through the '90s and 2000s. The original members got back together for a tour and compilation in 2012.

Anthem formed in Toronto in 1980 with Lenny Wolf on vocals, Ken Sinnaeve on guitar, Wayne Darley on bass, and Paul Miles on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out the next year and included the single 'Be My Lover,' which became a top 10 hit in Canada. They followed it with albums like 'Bound to Break' in 1983 and another self-titled record in 1984.

Wolf left the band in 1988, and Sinnaeve departed a year later. Anthem kept recording through the 1990s and early 2000s with albums such as 'Judgement Day' and 'Heavy Metal Heaven,' but they never matched the early success of 'Be My Lover.' The original lineup reunited in 2012 for a tour and a compilation called 'Anthems: The Best of Anthem.'
