Anticon

Anticon formed in 1998 as a collective rather than a traditional group, with Why? and Odd Nosdam among its founders. Their approach to hip-hop was deliberately unconventional, mixing electronic textures and abstract samples with the genre's rhythmic foundations. They released albums like 'Anticon' in 1999 and 'Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop' in 2000, establishing a catalog that resisted easy categorization.

The collective's roster included artists like Doseone, Jel, and Sole, with collaborations extending to acts such as cLOUDDEAD and Alias. Their 2007 album 'Deca' contained the track 'We Ain't Fessin', which drew criticism for its lyrics and was later removed from circulation. Anticon's work often faced pushback from hip-hop traditionalists who found their experimental direction challenging.

By operating as a fluid collective with shifting membership, Anticon avoided the fixed identity of most musical groups. Their output included projects like 'Shadowbox' in 2001 and 'Gaze' in 2003, maintaining a consistent focus on artistic exploration over commercial appeal.
