Antonio Gil Prieto

Antonio Gil Prieto was a Brazilian musician and composer born in 1952. He came from a Catholic family and started playing music in the 1970s with a band called Grupo Hojé, which mixed gospel and folk styles.

In 1987 he released his first solo album called "Dom." The next year he wrote "Hino do Bicentenário de Dom Bosco" for the 200th anniversary of Saint John Bosco's birth. That hymn became widely used in Catholic settings, particularly within the Salesian tradition.

Prieto was known for having strong opinions about religious matters, which sometimes created tension alongside his musical work. He kept composing and performing, though much of his recognition came from that one enduring hymn.
