Anuka

Anuka was an experimental group that came together in the early 2000s, with Sylvia Massy handling vocals. Their sound pulled from psychedelic rock and ambient music, creating these drifting, atmospheric tracks. Songs like 'Psychedelic Addict' and 'Colorblind' built around hypnotic guitar lines and Massy's airy singing, which gave everything a slightly detached, dreamlike quality.

They worked with guitarist Keith Richards and bassist David Torn, whose playing added texture and a percussive edge to the recordings. The music wasn't trying to fit a particular scene, it just unfolded slowly, with drones and extended instrumental sections that felt more about mood than structure. You can hear some of the same spaciousness you'd find in Brian Eno's work or the later, more abstract side of Pink Floyd.

Their lyrics often circled around themes of perception and longing, though they kept things pretty open to interpretation. A track like 'Ik Mis Je' has that same hazy, floating feel, where the meaning isn't spelled out so much as suggested by the tone and the delivery. They drew some criticism for being too vague or indulgent, but that was part of what made their records interesting to a certain audience, they weren't aiming for clarity.
