Ape X and The Neanderthal Death Squad formed in 2006 when frontman Skullcrusher and drummer Mayhem started playing together. They drew from extreme metal bands like Carcass and Morbid Angel, aiming for something raw and aggressive. Their debut album 'At the Mountains of Madness' came out in 2008, with songs that borrowed from Lovecraft's horror themes.
They put out two more albums, 'Eaters of the Dead' in 2011 and 'The Call of Ktulu' in 2014. The later work mixed in some deathcore and symphonic metal elements. Tracks like 'The Awakening of Cthulhu' and 'Book of the Dead' kept with their dark, heavy style.
The band's lyrics and album art often dealt with violence and gore, which drew criticism from some listeners. Their stage shows were similarly confrontational. They developed a cult following in metal circles without breaking into the mainstream.
