Approachable Members of Your Local Community formed in Sydney, Australia, with Aster Roze on vocals, Stott handling guitar and electronics, and Nathan Roche on bass and drums. Their 2013 self-titled EP had a raw post-punk energy mixed with electronic textures. By 2015's 'Lovers' album, they were working with more polished production while keeping that same uneasy blend of sounds.

Their 2017 single '(Fuck You) I Love You' got them wider attention. The song's title alone captured their tendency to pair abrasive energy with vulnerable sentiment.
