Aquaplay formed in Lisbon in 1974 with Vítor Rua on vocals, Pedro Ayres Magalhães on guitar, Rui Socas on bass, and Mário Barata on drums. Their name came from the water parks in the Algarve, which gives you a sense of their irreverent tone from the start.
Their debut single "Gineteia, muddafucka!" came out in 1978 and became an anthem. Other songs like "A Cabeleira" and "Ayrton Senna, Xuxa, Samba e Futebol" continued their mix of satire and social commentary.
They released albums including "Aquaplay" in 1979, "Punkalipsis" in 1980, and "Sombra e Água Fresca" in 1982.
