Arbeid Adelt formed in 1978 with Jan Rot on vocals and guitar, Ben Jolink on bass, and Hans la Faille on drums. Their 1980 song 'Aardbeien' became a hit in the Netherlands, its bittersweet lyrics about unrequited love connecting with listeners.
Rot left the band in 1982, and Jolink took over as lead vocalist. The following year, their song 'De Italiaanse Krant' caused a diplomatic incident between the Netherlands and Italy, leading to a cancelled tour.
They kept making music through the 1980s and 1990s, working across folk, rock, and reggae styles. Other songs like 'Bij Elkaar' and 'De Dag Dat Het Zonlicht Niet Meer Scheen' show their range. The band retired in 2003 but has played occasional reunion shows since.
