Editor's note

Architects, from Brighton's metalcore to arena anthems

A British metal band that weathered tragedy and kept evolving, anchored by songs like 'Animals' and 'Doomsday'.

If you want to hear where they landed, 'Doomsday' and 'Gone With The Wind' frame their later sound pretty well. They're not subtle, but they stick.

They've been a steady force in heavy music for nearly two decades, even as their lineup and sound shifted. 'Animals' from 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' became a signature track, and later songs like 'Doomsday' and 'Gone With The Wind' held their live sets together. Their 2014 album won a Kerrang! Award, and they kept putting out records after guitarist Tom Searle's death in 2016.

They started in Brighton in 2004, releasing 'Ruin' in 2007. After early lineup changes and the loss of Tim Hillier, they moved through albums like 'Hollow Crown' and 'Daybreaker' before 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' in 2014. Josh Middleton joined on guitar after Tom Searle died, and they've since released 'Holy Hell' and 'For Those That Wish to Exist'.

Architects formed in Brighton in 2004 with vocalist Sam Carter, guitarist Tom Searle, bassist Ali Dean, and drummer Matt Finch. Their first album, 'Ruin,' came out in 2007. They went through some lineup changes early on, and guitarist Tim Hillier died by suicide.

Over the next few years they put out albums like 'Hollow Crown' in 2009 and 'Daybreaker' in 2012. Their sound kept shifting, and by 2014 they released 'Lost Forever // Lost Together,' which won a Kerrang! Award for Album of the Year. The track 'Animals' from that record became one of their most recognizable songs.

Tom Searle died from cancer in 2016. After that, Josh Middleton joined on guitar. The band kept recording, with albums like 'Holy Hell' in 2018 and 'For Those That Wish to Exist' in 2021. Songs like 'Doomsday' and 'Gone With The Wind' have stayed in their setlists.
