Are You God?

Are You God? formed in São Paulo in 1984, with Jimmy da Gama on vocals and guitar, Paulo Zen on bass, Guilherme Gnipper on drums, and DJ Leão handling turntables and samples. Their early material was built around harsh vocals, distorted guitars, and electronic noise, which put them at the start of Brazil's industrial metal scene.

Their debut album, 'A Hora da Zona Morta (Full Circle)', came out in 1986. The title track became something of an anthem for a certain crowd. They kept recording through the late '80s and '90s, putting out albums like 'Inferno' in 1989 and 'Deus Ex Machina' in 1992. Songs like 'A Lei da Selva' and 'A Primeira Pedra' show how their sound later incorporated bits of hard rock and Brazilian rhythms alongside the industrial foundation.

The band had its share of difficulties, including financial trouble and some legal disputes. Their lyrics and imagery sometimes stirred up debate. In 1995, da Gama was arrested on a drug possession charge, which led to a break in their activity. They released another album, 'Ancestor of Shadows', in 1999 before fading from regular output.
