Area 12 formed in São Paulo in the early 1990s around vocalist Rodrigo Lima and guitarist Alexandre Fontanetti. Their music pulled from punk and hardcore but was grounded in Brazilian rhythms, avoiding the straightforward rock that dominated much of the scene at the time.
Their 1996 self-titled debut established their approach, and songs like 'Por Animal' and 'El Valor De Lo Simple' became staples. The band's lyrics often dealt with social inequality and personal struggle, delivered with Lima's urgent vocals over Fontanetti's sharp guitar work.
They released several albums through the 2000s, including 'Veneno' in 1999 and 'Ombudsman' in 2004. While never a mainstream commercial force, they maintained a dedicated following in Brazil's alternative circles, known for keeping their sound raw and their political perspective direct.
The lineup stabilized with Cauê Nardi on bass and Érico Devito on drums. Their 2009 album 'Nação Zumbi' continued in this vein, and tracks like 'Si No Estas' and 'Aprendiendo A Vivir' showed they hadn't softened their edges.
