Archive material and source history
Area 59 formed in 2001 with Felipe Santos on vocals, Robertinho de Recife on bass, and Rômulo Neto on drums. They came together in Brazil, drawing from rock, funk, reggae, and local rhythms without settling into one category.
Their self-titled debut album arrived in 2005, and the single "Toalha Molhada" caught on quickly. That track, along with others like "As coisas boas são como você" and "Nada Maior que o Céu," gave them a national presence. They put out three more studio albums over the next dozen years: "Tudo no Seu Lugar" in 2008, "Respeite Quem É Legal" in 2011, and a live record in 2017.
Like a lot of bands, they dealt with internal disagreements and shifting creative directions.
