Areavasta formed in Bogotá, Colombia in the early 2000s when vocalist Juan Pablo Tabares and guitarist Daniel Mejia started playing together. They were joined by drummer David Gómez and bassist Felipe Guevara, developing a sound rooted in alternative rock and punk.
Their debut album "Maldita Realidad" came out in 2006, with the title track addressing social inequality. The band's lyrics often dealt with political themes, which sometimes drew criticism from conservative circles. They followed with "Morir En El Escenario" in 2010, continuing to explore themes of injustice and oppression.
By 2013, Areavasta had begun incorporating other influences into their music, including reggae, hip-hop, and traditional Colombian rhythms. Their self-titled album that year showed this shift away from their earlier punk-oriented sound.
