A Rio de Janeiro group that has stretched samba-enredo traditions since the mid-1990s.
For a sense of their approach, try 'Samba-Enredo 2011 - Vizinha Faladeira Dá As Cartas' or 'Samba-Enredo 2020 - Aqui Ou Acolá, Este É o Meu Lugar.' They're both pretty straightforward examples of what they do.
They've been writing for Rio's samba schools since 1995's 'O Relicário do Samba,' which sparked debate about how far the form could stretch. Songs like 'Samba-Enredo 2013 - O Brasil Está Em Festa, a Visão da Pioneira' show their continued engagement with Brazilian themes. Beyond their samba-enredo work, albums like 2002's 'Identidade' incorporated jazz and MPB elements while keeping a samba foundation.
Formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1994, they started with samba-enredo compositions for local schools. Their 2005 entry '2222 - Gil, o Expresso da Cultura do Brasil' and 2006's 'Adorável Loucura na Cidade do Encantamento' came later in their school-focused period. The lineup has included Anderson Reis on vocals, Roni Lee on cavaquinho, and Ricardo Mendonça on soprano saxophone.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
