Editor's note

Aretha Franklin's voice defined soul music

From gospel roots to Atlantic Records hits, her voice carried both power and tenderness.

For the full picture, listen to 'I Say a Little Prayer' right after 'Think.' That's the range she worked in.

When she moved to Atlantic in 1966, Jerry Wexler helped shape the sound that produced 'Respect' and 'Chain of Fools.' That gospel intensity could shift from the quiet ache of 'Ain't No Way' to the commanding declaration of 'Think.' Even her later duet with George Michael, 'I Knew You Were Waiting For Me,' carried that same vocal authority.

She started singing in church as a child and signed with Columbia at 14, but her early work there didn't find much traction. The move to Atlantic Records in 1966 changed everything, leading to the 1967 album 'I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You' and the hits that followed.

Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942 and started singing in church as a child. She signed with Columbia Records at 14, though her early work there didn't find much commercial traction. Things changed when she moved to Atlantic Records in 1966, where producer Jerry Wexler helped shape the sound that would define her career. Her 1967 album 'I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You' included 'Respect' and 'Chain of Fools,' songs that became immediate classics.

In 1968 she recorded 'I Say a Little Prayer,' written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song reached the top 10 on the Billboard charts and joined other signature tracks like 'Think' and '(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman' in her catalog. Her voice carried a gospel intensity that could shift from tender ballads to commanding anthems, a quality heard in songs ranging from 'Ain't No Way' to the duet 'I Knew You Were Waiting For Me' with George Michael.

She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She died in 2018.
