Argentino Ledesma

Argentino Ledesma was born in 1928 in La Boca, a working-class Buenos Aires neighborhood where tango was part of everyday life. He started performing in the early 1950s, forming a trio with bandoneón player José Libertella and bassist Orlando Goñi. Their sound was built around Ledesma's vocals and the spare, intimate arrangements typical of small tango groups of that period.

In 1954, Ledesma wrote "Silueta Porteña," a song that became his most recognizable work. It captured something about the figures seen on Buenos Aires streets at dusk, and its popularity helped define his reputation. Other songs like "Baldosa Floja" and "Cuartito Azul" followed a similar path, sketching scenes of city life with straightforward, unadorned lyrics.

By the 1960s, when rock and roll began drawing younger audiences away from traditional forms, Ledesma kept working within the tango idiom. He recorded steadily through those years, maintaining a presence without much shift in style. The trio format remained his primary setting, and his later recordings continued in the vein he'd established in the 1950s.
