Arie Van Dam was born in Rotterdam in 1945 and worked in banking before turning to music. He started singing in local clubs, and his voice caught the attention of the Italian label Fonit Cetra, which signed him in 1966.
In 1967, he released "Ciao Ciao Carina," a ballad written by Roberto Vecchioni. The song became a hit in Italy, reaching the top of the charts. Van Dam sang in Italian despite being Dutch, which drew some criticism at the time.
He released albums like Ciao Ciao Carina in 1967 and Il Ritorno Di Arie Van Dam in 1968. His live band included guitarist Mario Gangi, bassist Silvio Radicioni, and drummer Severino Nazzaro.
