Army Of Lovers

Army of Lovers formed in Stockholm in 1987 around Alexander Bard, who brought in vocalists Camilla Henemark and Jean-Pierre Barda. Their early material faced some resistance in Sweden, partly because of their theatrical look and direct lyrics. Things shifted when 'Crucified' came out in 1991. That single, a dramatic Europop ballad, got international radio play and became their signature track.

They put out five studio albums between 1990 and 1995, including 'Massive Luxury Overdose' and 'The Gods of Earth and Heaven'. Songs like 'Sexual Revolution' and 'Obsession' kept them on dance floors and in the charts, mixing disco and synth-pop with a very deliberate, over-the-top style. The lineup changed in 1993 when Henemark left and was replaced by Michaela Dornonville de la Cour, with Bard and Barda staying at the center.

The group called it quits in 1996. Their music, especially the hits from the early '90s, still turns up in clubs and on retro playlists. For a few years there, with their flamboyant costumes and clear-eyed pop hooks, they carved out a specific, memorable corner of the European dance scene.
