Ars Moriendi

Back to artist page

Ars Moriendi is a Belgian band whose name translates to "the art of dying," which gives you a sense of where their music tends to go. Their lineup includes vocalist Senna Van Vliet, composer Baert Hendrickx, guitarist Frederik Van den Berghe, bassist Wim Van der Hoeven, and drummer Alex Agnew. They've released albums like The View from Here in 2009, The Visitor in 2012, The Fifth in 2016, and Conduit in 2019.

Their songs, including "A Weak Moment," "Breathless," and "Cold Heart," often deal with somber themes. Some critics have called their work overly morbid, but the band has generally stuck to their own vision without much fuss. Van Vliet's lyrics and vocals tend to carry that mood, set against the group's atmospheric instrumentals.

They operate in a space that pulls from rock and ambient textures, creating a particular kind of quiet intensity. It's not really music that chases trends or big choruses. Instead, it sits with its subjects, which might explain why a track like "Endless Silent Sleep" or "Dark Secrets" feels more like a sustained atmosphere than a conventional song.
