Ars Nova was a vocal quartet that formed in the 1950s, with Bob Hamilton on lead vocals and guitar, Dennis Girard on tenor vocals and guitar, Bob Thompson on baritone vocals and bass, and Jim Poole on drums. They released their debut album 'The Sound of Ars Nova' in 1961, which included their version of 'And How Am I To Know.' That song became their best-known track, though they also recorded 'Sunshine and Shadows.'
They put out a few more albums in the early 1960s, including 'Encore' in 1962 and 'The Third Album' in 1963. Girard left the group in 1964. The band's career was relatively short, with their final studio albums coming out in 1965 and 1966.
Their music featured vocal harmonies and lyrics that some critics at the time found too introspective. They weren't around long, but 'And How Am I To Know' stuck around in people's memories.
