Editor's note

As I Lay Dying, San Diego metalcore survivors

A band that weathered lineup shifts and a long hiatus to return with albums like 'Shaped by Fire.'

For their early sound, check out 'Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier.' 'My Own Grave' captures their later, more refined approach.

They helped define the 2000s metalcore sound with albums like 'Shadows Are Security' and 'An Ocean Between Us.' Songs like 'The Sound Of Truth' and 'My Own Grave' show their mix of aggression and melody. Their story includes a dramatic hiatus and comeback, which adds a layer to the music.

They started in San Diego in 2000 with 'Beneath the Encasing of Ashes.' After gaining traction with 'Shadows Are Security' in 2005, they released 'Awakened' in 2012 before a hiatus. They came back in 2019 with 'Shaped by Fire.'

As I Lay Dying formed in San Diego in 2000 with Tim Lambesis on vocals, Phil Sgrosso and Evan White on guitars, Jordan Mancino on drums, and Clint Norris on bass. Their first album, 'Beneath the Encasing of Ashes,' came out in 2001 and established their aggressive metalcore sound. They followed it with 'Frail Words Collapse' in 2003.

Their 2005 album 'Shadows Are Security' and 2007's 'An Ocean Between Us' found a wider audience with tracks like 'The Sound Of Truth' and 'Redefined.' The band's lineup shifted over time, with Nick Hipa joining on guitar and Ryan Neff on bass. They released 'The Powerless Rise' in 2010 and 'Awakened' in 2012.

In 2013, Lambesis was arrested and charged with soliciting murder, which led to a prison sentence. The band went on hiatus. They returned in 2019 with 'Shaped by Fire,' which included songs like 'My Only Home' and 'Redefined.'
