As Indomadas formed as an all-female collective in Rio de Janeiro in the early 2000s. Their music pulled from samba, funk, and hip-hop, and they faced some resistance in a male-dominated industry. Their lyrics often dealt with female empowerment and social justice, which drew both support and criticism.
Their debut album 'Agachar' came out in 2004, with the title track becoming something of an anthem. The original lineup included Sátira de Freitas on lead vocals and percussion, Elisa Maia on backing vocals and guitar, Fernanda Lira on bass, and Gabriela Luz on drums. Over time, the band's membership shifted and their sound incorporated reggae, rock, and electronic elements.
They released several albums after that, including 'Um Novo Tempo' in 2007, 'Nação Zumbi' in 2010, and 'Manda Bala' in 2013. They toured in South America, Europe, and the United States, and their music appeared in some films and television shows.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
