As Mulatas formed in 1988 in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo do Alemão neighborhood, with Vânia Rosa, Valéria Euzébio, Mariluce, and Lucia Helena making up the original lineup. They worked in the funk carioca style, pulling from samba and hip-hop as well. Their first album came out in 1989, followed by 'Sem Medo de Amar' in 1990 and 'Vem Pra Cá' in 1991.
Their song 'No Pique Das Putonas' got attention for lyrics that talked about women's lives and sexuality, which stirred up some debate at the time. They played shows around Brazil and abroad, including a date at Madison Square Garden in New York. The group had Rômulo Costa join on guitar later on.
As Mulatas kept making music through the early 1990s, with their records finding listeners who responded to the directness in their songs. The four women from Alemão built something that lasted past the usual flash of a funk act, working in a space where not many all-female bands were operating at that scale.
