Asfixia Social

Asfixia Social formed in São Paulo in the late 1980s, playing a mix of thrash and death metal that didn't quite fit with what was popular at the time. They put out their first album 'Contradiction' in 1991, which included the track '500 Anos de Contradição' that became something of an anthem for people frustrated with Brazil's social problems.

The band's lineup has stayed fairly consistent with Roberto Pascoal on vocals, João Gordo on bass, and Ricardo Bocão on drums. They kept releasing albums through the 1990s like 'Mensageiro da Dor' and 'O Caminho É a Moral', writing lyrics that directly addressed political and social issues in Brazil.

Other songs in their catalog like 'A Banca' and 'A Casa Vai Cair' continued in that vein, straightforward, heavy music with lyrics that didn't pull punches about what they saw happening around them.
