Ash Guff formed in 2003 when Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, who had previously played together in Rancid, teamed up with drummer Matt Skiba. The band's most recognizable work came early on with "Spider-Man," the theme they wrote for the 2002 film. That song's straightforward melody and Armstrong's vocal delivery gave the group a sudden, wide audience.
They put out a debut album called "Blues for the Red Sun" that mixed punk and rock with some folk touches. Later records included "Out of the Ashes" and "A Distant Shore." The band toured fairly heavily after the film's release, playing shows that were known for being loud and direct.
