Ash Ra Tempel

Ash Ra Tempel formed in Germany around 1970, with Manuel Göttsching on guitar and Klaus Schulze handling synthesizers. Their music leaned into extended improvisations and atmospheric textures, pulling from psychedelic rock and early electronic experimentation. The band's self-titled debut album arrived in 1971, setting a template for their exploratory approach.

Their work often unfolded as long-form instrumental pieces, with tracks like 'Day Dream' and 'Interplay Of Forces' building slowly through layered guitars and synthesizer patterns. The sound wasn't so much about traditional song structure as it was about creating immersive, drifting environments. Göttsching and Schulze were the consistent core, though other musicians like Hartmut Enke on drums came through on those early recordings.

By the mid-1970s, the project had evolved. Schulze departed for a solo career, while Göttsching continued under the Ash Ra Tempel name and later as Ashra. The music from this period, including pieces like 'Darkness: Flowers Must Die' and 'Jenseits', maintained that spacious, contemplative quality but began incorporating more rhythmic pulse and melodic clarity. They were part of that loose German scene that treated the studio itself as an instrument, less concerned with hits than with sustained mood.
