Editor's note

Ashanti, the voice behind 'Foolish' and Murder Inc.

A singer who turned a church choir start into a string of early-2000s R&B hits.

If you want the early-2000s vibe, 'Foolish' is still the one. For something later, try 'Only U' or that 'Yeah' track with Chris Brown and Ne-Yo.

She landed a number one with 'Foolish' right out of the gate in 2002, which pretty much defined that whole Murder Inc. era of smooth, sample-heavy R&B. Songs like 'Only U' and 'Rock Wit U (awww Baby)' kept that sound going for a while. Even after the label drama and some public missteps, she kept putting out albums like Braveheart and Can't Nobody.

She signed with Murder Inc. in 2002 and her debut single 'Foolish' went to number one. The next few years brought Chapter II and Concrete Rose, plus features on tracks like 'Wonderful (Remix)' with Ja Rule. Later albums like The Declaration and Braveheart came out after the label's peak, through a lawsuit and some uneven press.

Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born in Glen Cove, New York in 1980. She started singing in her church choir and auditioned for Star Search when she was 14. In 2002, she signed with Murder Inc. Records and released her self-titled debut album. That record included 'Foolish,' which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her second album, Chapter II, came out the following year with songs like 'Rock Wit U (awww Baby).' She worked with other artists on tracks such as 'Wonderful (Remix)' with Ja Rule. Ashanti put out several more albums including Concrete Rose in 2004 and The Declaration in 2008.

In 2009, there was a lawsuit from a former manager that was settled out of court. Five years later, some critics weren't happy with how she sang the national anthem at an NBA All-Star Game. She kept making music anyway, releasing Braveheart in 2014 and Can't Nobody in 2019.
