At the Drive-In formed in El Paso in the early 1990s, playing a kind of post-hardcore that felt both experimental and intensely physical. Their live shows were known for being chaotic, with stage diving and a confrontational energy that could alienate some listeners while drawing others in. The band released albums like Acrobatic Tenement in 1996 and In/Casino/Out in 1998, building a cult following before their breakthrough with Relationship of Command in 2000.
That album included songs like One Armed Scissor and Invalid Litter Dept., tracks that captured their explosive sound, angular guitar work, driving rhythms, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala's urgent, sometimes cryptic vocals. The lineup featured Bixler-Zavala on vocals, Omar Rodríguez-López on guitar, Jim Ward on guitar, Paul Hinojos on bass, and Tony Hajjar on drums. Internal tensions grew, partly from relentless touring, and Ward left in 2001.
At the Drive-In broke up later that year, but their music, especially from Relationship of Command, continued to influence later rock acts. Members went on to other projects, and the band's catalog, including songs like Cosmonaut and Pattern Against User, remains a touchstone for its raw, unsettled energy.
