At the Gates formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1990 with vocalist Tomas Lindberg, guitarists Anders Björler and Alf Svensson, bassist Jonas Björler, and drummer Adrian Erlandsson. They were part of that early 1990s Swedish death metal scene, though they had trouble getting shows outside their hometown at first.
Their 1995 album 'Slaughter of the Soul' became a touchstone for melodic death metal. Songs like 'Under A Serpent Sun' and 'Cold' showed their mix of aggressive riffing and more structured melodies. The album got them wider attention, but the band broke up the following year.
They reunited in 2007 for some shows, which led to new albums starting with 2014's 'At War with Reality.' They've kept playing and recording since, but that mid-90s period, especially 'Slaughter of the Soul,' is what most people talk about.
