They put out their first album, Piece of Time, in 1990, followed by Unquestionable Presence the next year. The band's music was dense and technical, weaving jazz and classical touches into a progressive metal framework.
Songs like 'Piece of Time' and 'Unquestionable Presence' showed how they built intricate structures around Shaefer's philosophical lyrics. Their playing was precise and relentless, earning them a reputation as serious instrumentalists even as some listeners found the complexity challenging. They released two more albums, Elements in 1993 and Jupiter in 1998, before going quiet for a stretch.
