Atlantic Starr formed in Stamford, Connecticut in 1976, originally calling themselves Newban. They started as a cover band, working out their sound before signing with A&M Records in 1980. Their self-titled debut came out that same year.
Their 1985 album "As the Band Turns" included the ballad "Always," which became their signature song. Other tracks like "Secret Lovers" and "All In The Name Of Love" followed, establishing their place in quiet storm and adult contemporary radio formats. The group's lineup shifted over time, with vocalist Ronald Isley leaving in 1986.
They kept recording through the late 1980s with albums like "Radiant" and "Time." The music stayed in that smooth, melodic pocket they'd found earlier in the decade.
