We’re building castles in a cave we call reason

Writing darkness on the walls tryin' to block the Sun

Pebbles, twigs, and straw, day by day we bring them

Oh, but darkened by our pride we can’t see what we’ve become

Oh, shadows of Providence dance on our walls of confidence

Can we not hear the words they tell?

We fight as humanists; we close our eyes and raise our fists

If this is enlightenment, why is it dark as hell?

We’re shoving God into a box we call out-dated

Throwing faith away 'cause we say it makes us blind

“Religion is a crutch, a drug to ease the jaded”

And we claim that “God is dead” and then proclaim ourselves divine

Here comes the light

That comes to wipe out the walls that we try to build high

Because we think we can hide

The next wave won't fell the next castle we build

Because we'll build it too well

So we bring in more straw

To make the bricks for the wall

Even this one won't fall

We work till we're beat

Because we'd rather just die
