Attic formed in 1971 as a quartet with John Schlitt on vocals and guitar, Bill Satcher on bass, Randy Thomas on keyboards, and Bob Hartley on drums. Their self-titled debut album established a sound that mixed folk, rock, and progressive elements, anchored by Schlitt's distinctive voice. Satcher left in 1974 after their second album, 'The City,' and was replaced by bassist John White.

Their 1976 album 'The Hound of Heaven' is remembered for its title track, which became something of a spiritual anthem. Other songs from their catalog include 'A Quest For Blood,' 'A Serpent In The Pulpit,' 'Born From Sin,' and 'Dark Hosanna.' They released several more albums through the late 1970s and into 1980, including 'Out of the Attic' and 'Distant Thunder.'
