Background notes

Archive material and source history

Aubrey Qwana, born Mzwakhe Qwana, grew up in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal. He came up listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, and those traditional Zulu rhythms and soulful melodies show up in his own music.

His 2015 single 'Molo' was the track that broke through for him. It had a haunting melody and lyrics about love and loss that connected with people, and it topped local charts. That led to his debut album 'Kwenzekile' in 2016, which mixed those Zulu influences with more contemporary sounds.

He followed that with albums like 'Inhliziyo,' 'Iziqhawe,' and 'Isphithiphithi.' His band has included drummer Luphumlo Lindani, bassist Xola Mbhele, and guitarist Khaya Mthethwa, and he's worked with other South African artists like Black Motion, DJ Maphorisa, and Cassper Nyovest.
