Editor's note

Audioslave: Soundgarden meets Rage Against the Machine

A supergroup that carved its own path with heavy riffs and soaring vocals.

For their signature blend, start with 'Like a Stone' and 'Be Yourself.' They show both sides of what this band could do.

When Chris Cornell joined forces with Rage Against the Machine's instrumentalists in 2001, they created something that wasn't just a mashup of their previous bands. Songs like 'Like a Stone' showed they could write melodic rock anthems with real weight behind them. Their self-titled debut proved they had their own identity, not just a side project.

They formed in 2001 and released their debut album the next year. After two more albums in 2005 and 2006, they disbanded in 2007. Their sound balanced Cornell's vocals with Morello's guitar work over that heavy rhythm section.

Archive material and source history

Audioslave formed in 2001 when Chris Cornell from Soundgarden joined with three members of Rage Against the Machine: guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk. They released their self-titled debut album the following year, which included the singles 'Cochise' and 'Like a Stone.'

Their sound combined Cornell's powerful vocals with Morello's distinctive guitar work over a heavy rhythm foundation. Songs like 'Be Yourself' and 'I Am The Highway' showed their ability to balance aggressive rock with more melodic, introspective material.

Audioslave put out two more albums, 'Out of Exile' in 2005 and 'Revelations' in 2006, before disbanding in 2007. During their time together, they managed to create music that felt distinct from both Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine while drawing from each band's strengths.
