Audrye Sessions formed in Brooklyn in 2013 around vocalist Audrye Esquivel, guitarist Dan Sliter, and drummer Benji Cowart. They put out a self-titled debut album in 2016 that caught some attention for its mix of soulful vocals and guitar work. The song 'Contagious' from 2017 became their most recognizable track, getting airplay on alternative radio.
That same song also drew criticism from some listeners who felt the band was appropriating Afrobeat rhythms and themes about Black experience without the background to support it.
They haven't released much in recent years, but their handful of songs still surface occasionally in indie playlists. For a band that only put out one proper album, they managed to create at least one track that people still remember, for better or worse.
