Avail formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1987 with Tim Barry on vocals, Kevin Tong on guitar, Joe Banks on bass, and Brad Barker on drums. They came up through the local punk scene, playing shows that built a following for their straightforward, energetic sound.
Their 1992 album 'Satiate' was a turning point, and the track 'Simple Song' became one of their most recognizable. They recorded several albums through the '90s and early 2000s, including '441 Shot' in 1994 and 'Over the James' in 1998.
Later lineups included Geoff Thomas on bass and Mike Wise on drums. The band's activity has been intermittent in recent years, but their early records from the Richmond era still get played.
