Avathar

Avathar formed in Sweden in 1991, with Markus "Miffs" Johansson on vocals and guitar. The lineup has stayed fairly consistent over time. They released their second album, "Hallucinations," in 1996, which brought them wider attention. Later albums like "Thought Chamber" in 2001 and "Mantra" in 2004 followed, with "A Tale of a Thousand Tears" arriving in 2007.

Their songs often have long, narrative titles drawn from fantasy themes, like "A Tale of a Thousand Tears and the Death of Glaurung" and "Morannon." The lyrics tend toward introspection and emotional weight, avoiding straightforward aggression. The music blends melodic guitar work with atmospheric keyboards, creating a sound that's heavy but not harsh.

In 2012, they put out "The Great Escape." While not a mainstream commercial force, Avathar has maintained a steady presence in the melodic metal underground, releasing albums every few years without dramatic shifts in style.
