Awkwafina

Nora Lum started making music as Awkwafina in 2014 with her debut EP 'Yellow Ranger.' Her early tracks like 'My Vag' and 'Queef' were deliberately brash and funny, built on simple beats and lyrics that didn't take themselves too seriously. She followed that with another EP in 2016 called 'In Fina We Trust.'

Songs like 'Fresh Water Salmon' and 'Green Tea,' which features Margaret Cho, have a playful, self-aware style. The writing is more clever than technical, with wordplay that feels conversational rather than crafted for radio. Her music has always been part of a broader comedic persona.

That persona eventually led to film work, with soundtrack contributions to movies like 'Crazy Rich Asians' and 'The Farewell.' In 2019, she addressed criticism about her past use of a 'blaccent' in interviews and apologized. These days, she's better known as an actor than a rapper, but those early, cheeky tracks are still what introduced her to people.
