Awure

Awure formed in Havana with saxophonist Yosvany Terry leading a group that included percussionist José "Pepito" Gómez, vocalist Elizabeth Rodríguez, bassist Rolando Luna, and drummer Rodney Barreto. Their music pulls from Cuban traditions like bembé and rumba, but they also fold in jazz and funk elements, which gives their sound a contemporary edge without losing its roots.

Their 2011 album Oyá Oyá featured the title track, a song dedicated to the Yoruba deity of wind and storms. That track became their most recognizable piece, though it also drew accusations of plagiarism in 2012 that led to some legal attention.

Other songs in their catalog include "Ponto da Cabocla da Mata," "Samba de Roda," and "Apaxorô," which all show their commitment to rhythmic, vocal-driven arrangements. They don't stick to one style, but the Cuban foundation is always there, whether they're playing something traditional or leaning into jazzier territory.
