Azul Azul formed in Santiago, Chile in 1985, with Miguel "Miguelito" Fuentes, Fernando "Nano" González, and Jorge "Coco" Fuentes among the original members. They started playing local festivals, building a following with their cumbia rhythms. In 1991, they released "La Bomba," a song with a simple, explosive beat that became an immediate hit across Latin America and Europe. That track, along with others like "Apretaito" and "La Batidora," defined their early sound.
In 1992, lead singer Miguelito Fuentes died in a car accident. The band continued, with Fernando González and Jorge Fuentes taking on vocal duties. They kept recording through the 1990s, putting out albums like "Por Eso Te Amo" in 1993 and "El Baile del Gorila" in 1995. Their music incorporated pop and rock elements over time, but remained rooted in danceable rhythms.
Azul Azul's lineup has included Carlos "Lolo" Peña on vocals, Patricio "Pelo" Fuentes on guitar, Hernán "Nano" Henríquez on bass, and Pedro "Pedrito" Vera on drums. They released albums into the 2000s, including "Azul Azul 2000" and "Explícame" in 2003. Songs like "50 Años" and "Loco" maintained their presence on dance floors long after "La Bomba" first broke.
