Archive material and source history

Azul de Metileno formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984. Their self-titled debut came out the following year, and by 1986 they had released "Contra Mão," a song that became something of an anthem in Brazil. The track's straightforward energy and lyrics about going against the grain connected with listeners, helping push the band beyond their local scene.

They kept recording through the late '80s and early '90s, putting out albums like "Surfando Nuvens" and "Júri Popular." Other songs like "Longe Daqui" and "Não Sou Eu" also found an audience. The band's lineup included Herbert Vianna on vocals and guitar, Marcelo Bonfá on guitar, Pedro Bronks on bass, and Juba on drums.

At one point in 1990, they were arrested after a performance authorities called subversive. That kind of friction wasn't entirely surprising given the direct tone of some of their material. They weren't trying to smooth things over.

Azul de Metileno made rock that pulled from punk and MPB without fussing too much about blending genres. They released about ten studio albums in total, and "Contra Mão" stayed in the conversation long after it first came out.
