Baader

Baader formed in Belém and released a few albums in the 1970s, including their self-titled debut in 1975 and 'A Bela Canção de Maria Joana' in 1979. The band's sound mixed rock with Brazilian folk elements, and their lyrics often carried a political edge. Songs like 'Aos Profetas' and 'Ignóbil' reflected this approach, delivered with a raw energy that stood out from more polished mainstream acts at the time.

Their 1979 album gave them their most recognizable song, 'A Bela Canção de Maria Joana,' which became something of an anthem. The track's narrative about a woman challenging conventions connected with listeners, and it remains the song most people associate with the band. Other tracks from that period, like 'Amor Libertino' and 'Blues da Lua,' showed their range within a rock framework that felt distinctly Brazilian.

Baader's lineup included Zé Maria on vocals, Renato Barros on guitar, Neto on bass, and Telo on drums. They played in clubs around Belém before recording, facing some local resistance to their style. Their music was occasionally subject to censorship during Brazil's military regime, which added to their reputation as an act operating outside the mainstream.

Later artists who valued lyrical directness and a rougher sonic palette sometimes pointed to Baader as an early example of that approach in Brazil.
